States' mismanagement causes mental health inequalities

Experts have lashed out at the Australian federal government, claiming the national mental health system is “a shambles” with states mismanaging funds causing inequities in mental health care.  The scathing review by three Australian mental health experts in the MJA said a lack of transparency and haphazard reporting meant it was unclear whether patients benefitted from the $8 billion in new money injected into the sector since 2006.  Lead author Sebastian Rosenberg told Psychiatry Update he had real concerns that “the money the government says it’s spending is not being spent where it claims.”  “We’re not seeing evidence that investment is being made on certain projects where it needs to be spent,” said Mr Rosenberg who is head of the National Mental Health...
