The stoush over early intervention (EI) in psychosis was reignited this month with a head-to-head appearing in the ANZJP.
World-leading expert and proponent of specialised early intervention services Professor Alison Yung from Orygen Youth Services was matched against outspoken critic of EPPIC and headspace Professor David Castle, head of psychiatry at St Vincent’s Health in Melbourne.
While Professor Yung claimed “evidence is emerging for the efficacy and cost effectiveness of EI for psychosis”, Professor Castle raised concerns of the potential for over diagnosis, citing the World Health Organisation incidence rates for psychosis of only 7-14 per 100 000 per year.
